When Is The Best Time To Prune Trees In Ireland?

Pruning at the right time of year makes all the difference between a tree that thrives and one that struggles. In Ireland's mild, wet climate, the rules are slightly different than in colder countries - so here's our season-by-season guide to pruning common garden trees.

The dormant season (November to March) is the safest time for most tree pruning. Trees are not actively growing, so removing branches causes less stress. The structure is also easier to see without leaves in the way. This is the ideal window for major work like crown reduction, crown thinning, and removing large limbs.

Late winter (February to early March) is particularly good for pruning apple and pear trees, as well as ornamental trees like birch, maple and oak. Pruning just before spring growth starts means wounds heal quickly as the tree comes into leaf.

Summer pruning (June to August) is best for trees that bleed sap heavily if pruned in winter - such as birch, walnut, maple and hornbeam. Summer pruning is also useful for slowing down the growth of overly vigorous trees.

One month you should never prune: April. This is when trees are putting out their first flush of new growth and sap is rising. Pruning in April can cause excessive bleeding, stress and leave the tree vulnerable to disease.

A final note for Irish gardeners: always check for nesting birds before pruning between March and August. It's illegal to disturb active nests under the Wildlife Act, and doing so can result in fines.
